Final Portrait |
For this assignment, I took a portrait of my sister, Isabel. I had several ideas of what I wanted to do that I thought might work, but I ended up going with this one. Isabel is lying on our living room carpet, and I positioned house plants around her so that it looked as if she was surrounded by them. I placed some on her face around her neck. I chose to take the picture here because I felt that the vines in the carpet would continue the pattern of the plants and echo that idea.
The emotion or feeling of this photograph is somewhat thoughtful and peaceful, but also otherworldly. I didn’t want it to seem quite real to the viewer. Isabel’s expression reflects this, but so do the plants and the angle of the photo. The plants reflect the idea that she is surrounded by nature, a place where people usually feel calm and peaceful.
This photo used a lot of pattern because of the pattern of the leaves and the design in the carpet being repeated a lot. The pattern brought unity to the piece through the repetition. Unity also comes through the way that green and red are major colors in the piece. The green leaves bring everything together, and the fact that there are leaves on Isabel’s face help her to ‘fit in’ with the rest of the photo. Movement in this photo comes from the lines the vines and leaves create.
Enjoy!
